The 11th Annual Cider Days Set to Kick off this Weekend

Historic Walnut Street will be filled with vendors and live entertainment this Saturday and Sunday for the 11th Annual Cider Days. KSMU's Nathan McVay has more

I'm standing in downtown Springfield where tomorrow an estimated 15,000 people will gather for the 11th Annual Cider Days. Some of the festivities include Arts and Crafts activities, live entertainment on 3 different stages and of course drinking cider which is provided by Jim Hamilton and the Coffee Ethic.

"We are the cider providers, I guess you would say. We will have two booths selling hot and cold cider and actually some of our coffee too as well during the two days,"

Cider Days which takes place on historic Walnut Street got its start in 1997. It originated when town organizers wanted to bring the community together for a festival to usher in the fall. Erin Lurvey, the festival manager says the Festival has a little something for everyone.

"It's an annual fall festival with artist and crafters, in addition to that we have the performing arts, there is a whole kids area, free hands on kids area with inflatable's, it's a really nice way for the community to come together and kick off fall here in community."

There are new elements to the festival this year. There will be shuttles running from the festival to downtown and another shuttle running to Commercial street to join the C-Street Loft walk.

There will also be past favorites including a competition to create the best scarecrow, pumpkin painting and live entertainment.

Lurvey says she has enjoyed having groups and businesses lend their support to make this years Cider Days a success.

"It's just fun to see everyone come together and you know people are ready for fall. They enjoyed summer but they are ready for fall and the cooler weather and it looks like we are going to have a really great, great fall weekend."

The Coffee Ethic's Jim Hamilton says he and his business love to be involved in the community and he looks forward to more opportunities in the future.

"It's just exciting being apart of activities that are happening down here and we are hoping that in the future more and more activities will take place right out our front door on the square, I think that would be exciting for Springfield."

The 11th Annual Cider Days takes place this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm on Walnut Street. Tickets are 4 dollars children ages 10 and younger get in for free. For KSMU News, I'm Nathan McVay
