300 Kids Volunteer Through LDS Youth Conference

Almost 300 kids were out serving the Springfield community Friday at various locations. The service day is part of a Youth Conference through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Students from around the Ozarks chose to spend this weekend of their summer vacations giving back to the community. Seventy of those students volunteered their time packaging meals at Kids Against Hunger. KSMU’s Adam Murphy reports.

The students who were working at Kids Against Hunger even made their own chant to remind them of everything that needed to be packed into the bagged meals. Those ingredients make up a vegetarian rice casserole, which is then sent all over the world. According to Karen Wood, with Kids Against Hunger, the meals packaged by these youth will be sent to Haiti.

The kids shake the ingredients down into the bags before they seal them shut with a hot press sealer. Wood says that these students package the most meals per volunteer than any other group. She expects them to package 20,000 meals or more during their three hours here.

One group is full of students who are spending their second year at this conference. Why do they choose to spend this weekend of their summer volunteering?

“Why? Because this is a lot funner. You can’t get a sunburn here, so it’s fun to serve,” said one of the kids.

Other groups of students attending the conference are spending the day at Ronald McDonald House, Ozarks Food Harvest, Missouri Hotel, Habitat for Humanity, Helping Hands, and setting up for the Springfield Community Fair.
