Abortion Legislation

A new legislative session is set to begin in Jefferson City and abortion related legislation comes up alomst every session.

K-S-M-U's Katie Hummel talks with two lobbyists on opposing sides of the abortion debate...

WHEN IT COMES TO ABORTION LEGISLATION, THERE ARE TWO LOBBYING GROUPS THAT COMMAND THE MOST INTEREST IN THE ABORTION DEBATE: MISSOURI RIGHT TO LIFE, AN ANTI-ABORTION ORGANIZATION AND PLANNED PARENTHOOD, A PRO-CHOICE GROUP.

KELLY ROHREAUGH IS THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS COORDINATOR FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF SOUTHWEST MISSOURI.

AND DAVE PLEMMONS IS THE COORDINATOR FOR MISSOURI RIGHT TO LIFE IN THE 7TH DISTRICT.

REGARDLESS OF WHAT SHAPE THE DEBATE TAKES, BOTH OPPONENTS AND SUPPORTERS OF ABORTION RIGHTS HAVE THEIR OWN LEGISLATIVE AGENDAS THEY'LL PUSH DURING THE UPCOMING SESSION.

KELLY ROHREAUGH SAYS PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS READY TO CHALLENGE LAWMAKERS IN JEFFERSON CITY TO ADOPT A FAMILY PLANNING BUDGET.

BUT PLEMMONS SAYS HE FEELS THE FAMILY PLANNING BUDGET WOULD GO TO THE WRONG CAUSE.

HE ARGUES THAT PLANNED PARENTHOOD DOESN'T SEPARATE THEIR ABORTION SERVICES FROM THEIR COUNSELING SERVICES.

BESIDES WORKING TO ENSURE FAMILY PLANNING MONEY DOESN'T FUND ABORTIONS, PLEMMONS SAYS HE AND OTHER PRO-LIFE ACTIVISTS WILL PUSH OTHER ABORTION-RELATED ISSUES.

FOR EXAMPLE, PLEMMONS SAYS HE EXPECTS LAWMAKERS TO FILE A BILL WHICH WOULD MAKE AN INDIVIDUAL CIVILLY LIABLE IF THEY TAKE A MINOR ACROSS STATE LINES TO HAVE AN ABORTION.

BUT ROHREAUGH SAYS SHE FEELS IT'S TIME TO SET ASIDE POLITICS AND FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANT THINGS.

ROHREAUGH SAYS SHE BELIEVES THAT BOTH SIDES SHARE A COMMON GOAL, SO IT MAKES SENSE TO WORK TOGETHER ON THIS.

BUT PLEMMONS CHALLENGES ROHREAUGH'S PLAN TO MAKE ABORTION RARE.
