Absentee Voting

Election day is tomorrow and KSMU's Katie Hummel visited the Greene County Clerk's office to find out how many people are voting absentee.

AS ABSENTEE BALLOT VOTERS FILE INTO THE GREENE COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE TODAY, VOLUNTEER STAFF TRY TO DEAL WITH THE HEAVY TRAFFIC.

THE GREEN COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE IS A BUZZ OF ACTIVITY AS VOTERS TURN TO THE POLLS EARLY FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS.

RICHARD STRUCKHOFF IS THE GREENE COUNTY CLERK AND THE ONE WHO OVERSEES THE VOTING PROCESS IN THE COUNTY.

STRUCKHOFF SAYS THERE ARE AT LEAST 5 VALID REASONS FOR VOTING ABSENTEE.

AND ALL OF THOSE EXCUSES AND MORE ARE BEING USED THIS ELECTION YEAR AS GREENE COUNTY VOTERS BREAK THE RECORD FOR ABSENTEE VOTING.

AND AS THE NUMBER INCREASES, SOME MIGHT WONDER JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO VOTE ABSENTEE.

STRUCKHOFF ADMITS THAT LYING ABOUT IT IS SOMEWHAT OF A PROBLEM FOR THE CLERK'S OFFICE.

BUT PEOPLE LIKE DORIS HOTTINGER DON'T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT BEING SCRUTINIZED WHEN THEY HAVE A VALID REASON FOR FILING ABSENTEE.

AND FOR FIRST-TIME VOTERS LIKE FRED MAY, IT'S EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TO GET TO THE POLLS : EVEN IF IT MEANS HAVING TO VOTE ABSENTEE.

AND WHILE ABSENTEE VOTING IS A MATTER OF CONVEINENCE FOR MOST GREENE COUNTY VOTERS : IT'S RESULTING IN THE WEAR AND TEAR OF SOME OF THE OFFICE WORKERS.

RICHARD STRUCKHOFF COMPARES HOLDING AN ELECTION TO HAVING A BABY.

AND IT WILL BE OVER SOON.

THE LAST TIME TO CAST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT IN GREENE COUNTY IS 5 P.M. THIS EVENING.

REGULAR VOTERS CAN THEN START THEIR VOTING TOMORROW MORNING WHEN THE POLLS OPEN AT 6 A.M.
