"Because there are fires burning in Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri, we did decide that it was necessary to raise the level of the Air Quality Index from a good level to a moderate level."
The Air Quality Index shows the amount of particulate matter found in the air at any given time. According to the Health Department, particulate matter may contain fine particles with microscopic solids or liquid droplets that can become embedded in the lungs and cause serious health problems.Towns-Jeter explains what you need to keep in mind when the Air Quality Index is at the Moderate or Yellow level…
"People just need to make sure that--they need to monitor themselves and know that if they do start to experience any increased problems with asthma or difficulty breathing, coughing, irritated airways that they would remove themselves from the outdoor air and try to place themselves in an environment that is more controlled such as an indoor space where the windows can be closed and the air that is breathed can be more controlled to be at a good level."
If particulate matter continues to travel into the Springfield area, the Health Department says air quality levels could be elevated to the ‘slightly unhealthy’ or orange level. That could be potentially harmful for people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children. People who fall into that category should avoid prolonged exposure or heavy exertion when Air Quality Index is at the orange level.’ For more information, visit http://www.springfieldmo.gov/health/index.jsp#page=airQuality.
