Amidst Cancelled Ozarks Blood Drives, an Urgent Call for 'O Negative' and 'A Negative' Blood

The winter storm has led to the cancellation of several blood drives.  But the need for blood is constant, meaning area hospitals might soon face a shortage of certain blood types if donations don’t pick up.

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, or CBCO, has issued a "Code Yellow Alert"  for O Negative and A Negative blood types.   That means there’s less than a two-day supply of these blood types on hospital shelves and donations are needed immediately.

Donors to Community Blood Center of the Ozarks (CBCO) provide all of the blood for patients at 38 area hospitals, where transfusions take place, on average, every five minutes.

To be eligible to give blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and present a valid photo ID.

In Springfield, you may give blood at CBCO’s Campbell Donor Center, 220 Plainview Rd. (open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday), or the Glenstone Donor Center, 2230 S. Glenstone Ave. (Open 7:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday thru Friday).   There are scores of other locations across the Ozarks.  To learn more, you can scan the list below, or visit www.cbco.org. You can call the CBCO at 1-800-280-5337.
