Avenue of Flags to acknowledge SMSU's international community

Along with the Stars and Stripes of the American Flag, this week, the mall that extends east to west from Carrington Hall to Strong Hall at SMSU is lioned with the flags of 118 other nations. Mike Smith has the story:

According to Earl Doman, Dean of Students at SMSU, the Centennial Avenue of Flags is one of the continuing icons of the University's 100th anniversary, and serves to provide visual acknowledgement of the contributions to SMSU from international students and faculty. Doman says the flags also denote SMSU's commitment to its Public Affairs Mission, and acts as a visual reminder of the inaugural Public Affairs Conference at SMS April 13-15th.

SMSU President John Keiser says the Public Affairs Conference and the Centennial Avenue of Flags recognize global citizenship as a major element of becoming an educated person at SMS. He says the flags represent the fact that SMS has done a great deal to acheive what he calls "Borderless Education".

Mamady Koita, President of SMSU's Association of International Students, says he and the nearly 500 other international students at SMS appreciate the symbolism the Centennial Avenue of Flags represent.

For KSMU News, I'm Mike Smith.
