Blood Supplies For Area Hospitals Are Low

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks needs your help to make sure there's enough blood in the next few weeks for the hospital patients that need it. Michele Skalicky has more...

The CBCO is still struggling to keep enough blood on its shelves for the 36 area medical facilities it serves. Spokesman Chris Pilgrim blames the recent winter weather for keeping donors away.

"The winter storms did negatively affect our blood supply, and we had that ice storm in the area back in early January, and that's when we first saw blood supplies begin to weaken a little bit. This latest bout of severe weather certainly didn't help us at all, and we're going to be scrambling for the next week or so trying to build back up our reserve."

The CBCO is under a code yellow alert. There's less than a 2-day supply of all negative blood types as well as B positive on the center's shelves. A blood drive Saturday helped but didn't attract enough donors to make enough of a difference.

"About 75 units were brought in on that day here at the Springfield center and a few more in Joplin, but when you consider it takes 275 donations every day to meet the needs of our area patients, that was certainly a drop in the bucket. While it was good, it certainly didn't serve to build our reserves back up."

To find out how to give, call the CBCO at 227-5000 or go to cbco.org. For KSMU News, I'm Michele Skalicky.
