Branson GIS Coordinator Awaits Call to Help

Two firefighters from the Branson Fire Department headed for the Gulf Coast this weekend to help with hurricane relief efforts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has asked full-time fire departments across the country to mobilize two-person teams to serve for 30 days in the disaster areas. FEMA is hoping to have one thousand two-person teams in place. It's not just firefighters who are getting the call. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The global information systems and mapping coordinator for the City of Branson is on standby, waiting to see if he'll be asked to go to areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Curtis Copeland says he got on the waiting list last week when the GIS Corps came calling.

Copeland says 20 members of the GIS Corps are already in Louisiana.

He says they've helped with rescue efforts.

In addition to helping with rescues, the GIS professionals are helping people connect with family members in Mississippi and Louisiana.

The website that allows you to search for missing people is GIS tools dot org slash M-E-M-A dot html.

In the meantime, Curtis Copeland says he's staying close to the phone in his Branson office, waiting for the call.

Copeland says if he's asked to go to the disaster areas, the city of Branson has agreed to let him take the city's Global Positioning equipment with him.
