The National Avenue bridge that crosses over the James River Freeway will be closed for last-minute work on the interchange this weekend. KSMU’s Jennifer Moore has details.
The end is in sight for drivers who frequently drive along National Avenue over the James River Freeway, or US 60. The bridge will close Friday night and will re-open Monday morning as a new, Diverging Diamond interchange.
The new interchange will be similar to the interchange at Highway 13 and I-44 North of Springfield, except the newer one on the south side of town will have three lanes going each direction instead of two.
Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) officials are urging the public to avoid getting close to the interchange in the coming days if at all possible.
For CoxHealth patients, the hospital’s facilities will still be accessible from Primrose Street, on both sides of National Avenue. Officials said exceptions will be made even on the bridge for patients who are clearly in an emergency needing to get to the hospital.
The $9.7 million project is a joint venture between the City of Springfield, MoDOT, and CoxHealth. The City of Springfield is using stimulus funds and transportation sales tax funds to pay for its portion.
Although the bridge will reopen Monday morning, crews will continue to do work on the interchange. The entire project is expected to be finished in August.
