The Centers for Disease Control has warned the public that this flu season could be especially brutal. As KSMU's Missy Shelton reports, local public health officials are taking that message seriously.
CLAY GODDARD IS A COMMUNITY HEALTH PLANNER WITH THE SPRINGFIELD-GREENE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
HE EXPLAINS WHY THE FLU SEASON MAY BE WORSE THAN USUAL.
WITH THE PREDICTION OF A BAD FLU SEASON, GODDARD SAYS IT'S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO GET A FLU SHOT.
AND FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO DON'T GET THE VACCINE BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IT WILL MAKE THEM SICK...? GODDARD SAYS IT'S UNLIKELY THE SHOT WILL MAKE YOU HAVE FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS.
AND THERE'S ANOTHER MYTH RELATED TO THE FLU THAT GODDARD WOULD LIKE TO DISPELL.
LAST YEAR, GREENE COUNTY HAD 94 REPORTED CASES OF THE FLU...BUT GODDARD SAYS THAT NUMBER LIKELY IS LOW...
IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE THE FLU, GODDARD SAYS THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO, IN THE INTERST OF PRESERVING PUBLIC HEALTH IS STAY HOME.
FLU SHOTS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S IMMUNIZATION CENTER...FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL 837-5780.
