Candidates Weigh In on Repeal of Campaign Contribution Limits

The Missouri Senate gave final approval today (Thursday) to a measure that would remove the caps on campaign contributions. Two of the candidates running for governor responded to the bill clearing the senate. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports from Jefferson City.

The bill cleared the Senate with overwhelming support. Opposition came only from a handful of democrats.

Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon who's running for governor says he opposes the measure because it goes against the will of the people. Voters approved campaign contribution limits in 1994.

But one of the Republicans running for Governor, Republican Congressman Kenny Hulsof says he'd sign a bill repealing campaign contribution limits.

Candidates for governor stand to benefit from the bill because it would allow campaign contributions of any amount.

Hulshof and Nixon made the comments at an event for news media at the capitol. State Treasurer Sara Stealman who has also announced she's running for governor was not at the capitol for the event because of icy roads.

The measure that removes campaign contribution limits now moves to the House.
