Drury University officials estimate 11 hundred people showed up today for the panel discussion Democracy and Dissent. This convocation series event drew a lot of attention on and off campus because one of the participants was Cindy Sheehan, an anti-war activist whose son was killed while serving in Iraq. Colonel Michael Meese was also a panelist. He's the chief economic advisor to General David Patraeus in Iraq. KSMU's Missy Shelton files this report on the panel discussion.
Drury University officials estimate 11 hundred people showed up today for the panel discussion Democracy and Dissent. This convocation series event drew a lot of attention on and off campus because one of the participants was Cindy Sheehan, an anti-war activist whose son was killed while serving in Iraq. Drury University officials say ten college Republicans showed up outside the event to protest. The other panelists were Colonel Michael Meese and Drury professor Rick Maxson.
During her speech, Sheehan talked about the importance of respecting all voices in a democracy.
One of Sheehan's fellow panelists was Colonel Michael Meese. As the chief economic advisor to Lieutenant General David Patraeus, Meese is coordinating the reconstruction effort and security in Iraq. He talked about the importance of what he called productive dissent.
At a press conference following the panel discussion, Meese was asked if his fellow panelist Cindy Sheehan engages in productive dissent.
The panel began with an academic perspective on dissent presented by Drury professor Rick Maxson.
The panel discussion ended with questions from the audience. One audience member asked Cindy Sheehan about some recent comments she made.
Sheehan went on to explain her frustration with media coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre.
Sheehan's comments angered some like Drury sophomore Sara Goodman.
A number of people came to Drury to support Cindy Sheehan...Mary Chipman is a retired teacher and a member of the Peace Network of the Ozarks.
The panel discussion was part of the Drury University convocation series "Liberty and Security in a post-9/11 World."
