Click It or Ticket Campaign Hopes to Save Lives

Only 76% of drivers in Missouri wear their seat belts. And the teen seat belt usage rate is only 62%. That compares to a national average of 83%. Law enforcement agencies in the state hope to increase that percentage during the Click It or Ticket Campaign, which runs thru May 31st.Missouri Department of Transportation spokesperson Revee White hopes the Click It or Ticket Campaign will encourage people to wear their seat belts…

"Law enforcement officers have teamed up all across the state and will be cracking down on unbelted drivers May 18th through 31st, and this is actually part of a national Click It or Ticket Campaign, so this will be occurring all over the nation."

In Missouri, expect officers to be paying greater attention to seat belt use…

"You'll see more safety seat violations. You'll see more law enforcement out enforcing the seat belt law in Missouri. They'll also be focusing on child safety seat violations. When drivers are not buckled up, 30% of children are also not restrained. When the driver is buckled up, only 2% of children are not restrained."

According to Lt. Faye Barksdale with the Springfield Police Department, officers here will be paying more attention to seat belt use when they make stops.Missouri has a secondary seat belt law—officers can ticket a person for not buckling up only if they are pulled over for another violation.A US Department of Transportation study released last week estimates that 1,652 lives could be saved and 22,372 serious injuries prevented each year on America’s roadways if seat belt use rates rose to 90% in each state.
