China has been in the news lately because of product recalls involving toys and other items. These reports have U.S. consumers wondering about regulations and standards in China. On September 29th and 30th, China and Taiwan will be the focus of a conference at Missouri State University. The event is free and open to the public. As KSMU's Missy Shelton reports, consumer safety is just one of many issues related to democratization in Asia.
The conference will examine issues related to democratization in China and Taiwan.
Dennis Hickey is the conference organizer, a Missouri State Professor and director of the graduate program in international affairs in the political science department. He says democratization relates to product safety.
Hickey says beyond concerns about product safety, there are many reasons Americans are interested in democratization in China.
He says there are connections between the local community and China.
Hickey says Americans will be interested in learning about the differences between China's economy and its government.
Hickey says the conference will look to the future...2008 promises to be an interesting year for China, with the Olympics and other important events.
