County Officials Break Ground on New Riverbluff Cave Facility

New discoveries and increased interest in Riverbluff Cave mean construction on a new building at the site couldn't come at a better time. Greene County officials gathered this morning to break ground on the Field House Annex. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The new Field House Annex will be twice as large as the current facility and will accommodate larger groups interested in viewing the fossils and artifacts found inside the cave.

Matt Forir is Executive Director of the Missouri Institute of Natural Science and an environmental specialist with Greene County.

Funding fo rhte 2,500 square-foot building came exclusively through grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant totaled $195,000.

Riverbluff is believed to be the oldest fossil cave in North America. Researchers recently found evidence of wolves that lived in the cave 600 thousand years ago. Riverbluff Cave is located in southwest Greene County.
