Driving Tips for Deer Season

With the firearms portion of deer season in full swing, deer are more on the move. These driving tips help avoid deer-vehicle crashes. KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

Shorter days and cooler weather means deer are more on the move and more likely to cross a road in front of oncoming traffic.

Francis Skalicky is a spokesperson for the Missouri Conservation Department and says deer are more active this time of year for a couple of reasons.

Skalicky says drivers should be more alert for deer especially during the evening and early morning hours and in heavily wooded areas.

He says this time of year is when the number of deer-vehicle crashes take an upward spike and that there are more than one million deer in Missouri.

In addition to the deer mating season this time of year, the firearms portion of deer season began Saturday, November 12th.

Skalicky says the Missouri economy gains 220 million dollars from deer hunting business activity each year and nearly one-half million Missourians hunt deer each year.
