Drury Students Compete for Cash Prizes in a Challenge

More than 150 students at Drury University are participating in a unique project that asks them to learn the importance of giving back to the community. For a little extra incentive, they are competing to win cash prizes. KSMU’s Alvin Chen reports.

The Drury/Community Foundation of the Ozarks Student Challenge creates a research project for students from Drury’s Alpha classes and one business class. The students are sent out to explore the “red flag” issues affecting the community. The students choose a topic, and work with non-profit or governmental organizations after researching the problem. Then they create proposals for projects that address the “red flag” issues.

Teams with the best proposals were announced at Drury’s Theme Day on Thursday, April 30th.

Ryan Van Bibber is the Director of Communications for the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, one of the project’s sponsors.

$2,000 of the prize money was donated from the Edward Jones Center and another $500 came from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

Van Bibber also says a project like this is created to show students how their studies have real-life application. Students learn critical thinking and research skills by solving problems, and they know more about the communities in which they live.
