Eckersley Says Withdrawl Email a Hoax, Blames Incident on Long

Democratic candidate for Congress Scott Eckersley says he is still in the race, and that an email sent to local media Friday morning claiming he had dropped out was a hoax. KSMU's Jennifer Moore has the details.

The false email was sent in Eckersley’s name Friday morning, but from a new email account. It had a typo and a grammatical error.

At his campaign headquarters in downtown Springfield Friday morning, Eckersley speculated that the hoax came from his opponent, Republican Billy Long.

“You know, this is dirty politics. This is Jeff Roe-style management. That’s who Billy has retained. That’s who he writes the big checks to. This is Kansas City management doing what they do best, which is playing dirty,” Eckersley said.

Jeff Roe is a political consultant who runs the firm Axiom Strategies, which has offices in Kansas City and Washington, D.C. According to Axiom’s website, the focus is clearly on winning. The top of the website says, “We believe that at the core of every campaign is the ability to win through strategic planning, a razor sharp message, and a lot of hard work.”

A spokesperson for Billy Long’s campaign, Royce Redding, said early in the day he was not familiar with the email incident and did not wish to comment.

An associate from Axiom Strategies, Jason Klindt, confirmed to KSMU that Billy Long has indeed retained Axiom Strategies for his campaign. He denied that the email came from his firm, however, saying Eckersley was throwing out – quote – “wild accusations.” –end quote.

Eckersley says he has also been followed by men video taping him, and also that his girlfriend has been followed while shopping for groceries. He says both of their doorbells regularly go off at 3 a.m.

The election is Tuesday.
