The National Weather Service in Springfield is forecasting an excessive heat wave for most of the Fourth of July weekend. KSMU’s Matthew Barnes reports.
According to the National Weather Service, the temperature will be in the mid to upper nineties from Thursday to Sunday. Doug Kramer, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service talks about the type of heat residents will be facing.
“The combination of this heat and the high humidity levels will create very oppressive conditions across the region. As a matter of fact, The National Weather Service is forecasting heat indexes to approach 105 degrees on an afternoon basis,” says Kramer.
Many are expected to be celebrating outdoors this weekend and the weather service has several tips to avoid heat-related illness.
“You just want to stay cool. If you’re working or participating in outdoor activities you want to try to get some shade, as much as possible. Avoid the sun burn, use sun block. You definitely want to drink plenty of fluid, avoid caffeine and alcohol,” says Kramer.
The heat wave is expected to subside sometime around Sunday evening.
