Expert at YMCA Gives Advice on Kids Fitness

Statistics show that approximately 30% of American children are overweight, and 15% of them are obese. KSMU's Alvin Chen went down to the local "Y" to hear from experts on how you can get your kids moving.

At the downtown YMCA, children enjoy a game of basketball. They're sweating; their hearts are beating rapidly, and they're having a good time.

Now that school's out, it's a great opportunity for kids to get out and play. But many kids tend to sit around on the sofa and watch TV.

Mary Kromrey is the associate executive director for the downtown YMCA. She says parents should be aware of how much exercise their children are getting, and encourage them to do more.

Kromrey says parents serve as role models for their children, so it's important for parents to be active with them.

She says besides exercise, a healthy diet is also important.

For KSMU News, I'm Alvin Chen.
