Farm Bureau, MSU Students Give Time, Resources to Ronald McDonald House Visitors

This week, The Missouri Farm Bureau and students from Missouri State University teamed up to make life a little easier for the people staying there.

The Ronald McDonald House is a place for families to stay when their loved ones are undergoing medical treatment in Springfield. This week, The Missouri Farm Bureau and students from Missouri State University teamed up to make life a little easier for the people staying there. KSMU’s Shannon Bowers has the story.

At the Ronald McDonald House on East Primrose, staff members and families gather together around a home cooked meal of spaghetti, French bread, salad, and for desert, cookies.

This week was declared by the City of Springfield to be “Ronald McDonald House Week.” The local organization is having its “Share a Heart Campaign,” where the community can donate money in $1, $5, and $20 increments at your local McDonalds. Bonnie Keller is president of the organization.

“Last year the campaign raised $92,000 and we hope to grow that to over 100,000 now that we have two houses to support,” said Keller.

In addition, The Missouri Farm Bureau kept its 15 year tradition of donating canned goods, individually packaged items and $175 in gift cards for perishable items.

Diane Olson is from the Missouri Farm Bureau. She says it's important to donate to the Ronald McDonald House because it provides an important service--especially for rural visitors.

This donation coincides with the Farm Bureau's “Thank a Farmer Week.”

“We want to draw attention to agriculture. People take for granted where their food, shelter, and clothing because we can find it readily available in the market place. We declare this week to draw attention to the important role the farmer plays and the impact what they do has all of us every day,” said Olson.

The Ronald McDonald House recently opened a second location in the Springfield area. Operating cost for the two houses is over $800,000 a year.
