Farmers' Market Opens

The Greater Springfield Farmers' Market will kick off a new season this Thursday. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

THE SPRINGFIELD FARMERS' MARKET IS THE LARGEST CLASS A MARKET IN THE STATE. BECAUSE IT'S CLASS A, ONLY GROWERS CAN SELL...THERE IS NO RE-SALE ALLOWED. ALREADY MORE THAN 85 VENDORS ARE SLATED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MARKET, A NEW RECORD. DIANA BOTSFORD IS THE MARKETING DIRECTOR FOR THE MARKET...SHE SAYS THE MARKET IS REALLY GROWING. IN ADDITION TO MEAT, THE FARMERS' MARKET OFFERS FRESH VEGETABLES AND EVEN PLANTS SO YOU CAN GROW YOUR OWN. BOTSFORD SAYS THE PEOPLE WHO SELL PLANTS WILL TELL YOU HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. IF YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO A FARMERS' MARKET, YOU MIGHT HAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THE PRODUCTS ARE GOING TO BE A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE GROCERY STORE WHERE YOU'RE USED TO SHOPPING. BOTSFORD SAYS THAT'S NOT THE CASE. INFORMATION ON THE GREATER SPRINGFIELD IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT SPRINGFIELD FARMERS MARKET DOT COM. I'M MISSY SHELTON FOR KSMU NEWS.
