Fine Arts Academy Uncertain of Future Funding

The Missouri Fine Arts Academy is a program at Missouri State University that provides artistic, extracurricular, and social opportunities for Missouri’s talented high school students each summer. The Academy’s funds are appropriated by the Missouri Legislature.

Funds for the 2009 program are secure. But now a discussion is taking place in the legislature on whether the Academy will receive funding for 2010. KSMU’s Alvin Chen reports.

Already this legislative year, there has been a debate of whether the Academy funding should be cut or not in 2010. Julie Bloodworth is the Director of the Missouri Fine Arts Academy. She says it’s a discussion that takes place almost every year, but given the economic situation, this year it might be different than others.

"In difficult economic times, the Legislature looks very carefully at every single line item. So, it's more nerve-racking than usual." Bloodworth says.

Bloodworth is trying to convey to legislators the importance of the Academy.

"We are trying to get the message to some legislators that supporting the Fine Arts and the Schloars Academy is worthwhile on a state level. So, we are hoping that a good level of state funding will allow us to continue to help ourselves." Bloodworth says.

Bloodworth also says the state’s final decision for funding the Academy next year will be made in May.

The Missouri Fine Arts Academy is scheduled to take place June 7-27 this year in Springfield. The Academy has been running since 1996.
