Firefighters Remind Residents to Change Smoke Alarm Batteries

It’s almost that time of year to “spring forward” by setting your clock an hour ahead for daylight savings. The Branson Fire Department is also reminding residents to take part in basic fire safety procedures, by participating in the “Check Your Clock – Change Your Battery” campaign. KSMU’s Mike Donnelly has the details.

It’s something that comes around every year during the spring: yes, setting your alarm clock an hour ahead. But also it’s the time to check a much more important device in your home: your smoke detector.

The Branson Fire Department is reminding Ozarks residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors this spring by participating in the “Check Your Clock – Change Your Battery” campaign. Tim Martin, Division Chief for the fire department, explains.

“We now know that about 95% of the American homes have smoke alarms in them, but we’re starting to find out that more and more have dead, worn out, or missing batteries. It comes back to the opportunity to encourage folks to change their batteries twice a year, test those batteries once a month by testing the smoke alarm with the push button, and make sure it sounds. And then on top of that have the home family escape plan going two ways out of each room of the home. That way, when the alarm sounds, you have your action plan, and then you have a meeting place outside where you can take a head count, and make sure everybody is accounted for, then make that call for help through 9-1-1,” says Martin.

The Branson Fire Department has a limited number of smoke detectors it’s giving out free of charge for those who need one. For more information, call their technical services division at 337-8580 or go to our website, ksmu.org.
