Flooding Record 'Shattered,' NWS Says More Rain Ahead

Flood Warning

Springfield has broken a record for the amount of rainfall in a 24-hour period…and more rain is apparently on the way. KSMU’s Jennifer Moore reports on the flooding this rainfall is already causing.

Multiple traffic accidents and water rescues have already taken place throughout Greene County due to drivers trying to drive on flooded roadways.

Larry Woods, assistant director of the Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management, said numerous roads are closed due to flooding. However, he said many people are driving around those barricades, risking their lives in doing so.

As of 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, 29 roads in Greene County, including Scenic Avenue between Battlefield Road and Farm Road 164, were closed due to water over the roads.

I spoke with meteorologist Andy Foster of the National Weather Service in Springfield on Wednesday’s record-breaking rainfall, and what’s headed our way over the next couple of days.

“We have received here at the National Weather Service near the airport in Springfield 3.27 inches of rainfall so far today. Of course, it’s still raining outside. That breaks the old record of 2.47 [inches] that was set in 1958. So we pretty much shattered that record. And we’re adding to that total as we go along today,” Foster said.

Foster said a cold front will move through the region Thursday, bringing with it another round of rainfall Thursday afternoon and into the night. Friday, he said, we can expect to see highs around the lower 80s, but the temperature will eventually warm up again to more summer-like weather.
