For most children the summertime means no school, but for others it means not much food. Hundreds of children from low-income families eat best when they’re at school. KSMU's Justin Lux has the report.
Beginning June 7 and running all the way through July 2, Springfield Public Schools and the Summer Food Service Program, or SFSP, will partner up at seven school sites to provide breakfast and lunch for children ages 18 and under.
The school sites where the meals will be provided are Study, Weaver, McGregor, Cowden, Delaware, Pipkin and Portland.
Even though the students are out of school for the summer, a healthy diet is still important. With the help of the Department of Health and Senior Services the SFSP is able to provide meals free of charge.
Children who do not attend the seven school sites mentioned will still be able to receive the meals as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
For KSMU News, I'm Justin Lux.
