Free Health Screenings Will Help Kids Start the New School Year Healthy

The start of a new school year can be intimidating enough for kids without the additional worry about problems with hearing or vision. Jordan Valley Community Health Center wants to be sure kids are ready for the new school year, so they’re offering free health screenings and shots. KSMU’s Michele Skalicky has more…

Next week, for three days, parents can make sure their kids are healthy and ready to start back to school. Jordan Valley Community Health Center will host “Keep Kids Healthy Week” Monday thru Wednesday (7/26-7/28) from 8 to 5 each day.Spence Jackson, spokesman for the Health Center, says they’ll offer free vaccinations, free vision and hearing tests, free sports physicals and free dental screenings. He says they decided to do this to give back to the community and to give kids a healthy start to the school year…

"We see a lot of children here at Jordan Valley Community Health Center, and a lot of them, for whatever reason or another don't always get in to see doctors and dentists regularly, and so we thought this would be a good opportunity for us to open our doors up and help as many kids as we can get the healthy start that they need going into the school year."

Parents should take immunization records with them if they have them, but Jackson says it’s not necessary. There’s going to be entertainment and giveaways. One family will win bikes for each member…

"So that they can, you know, ride bikes together and hopefully have a healthy lifestyle, and that's kind of what this is all about is just families and bringing everybody together and helping the community get a little healthier."

Spence Jackson hopes some of the families who take advantage of the free services next week will consider making Jordan Valley Community Health Center their health care home. The Health Center is at 440 E. Tampa, just south of Chestnut and Benton. Anyone can take advantage of the free screenings, regardless of income. No appointments are need. For more information, 831-0150.
