Gillioz Film Festival Opens This Weekend

The first-ever Gillioz Film Festival is this Saturday. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

THOUGH IT'S CALLED THE GILLIOZ FILM FESTIVAL, THE EVENT WON'T TAKE PLACE AT THE HISTROIC THEATRE THAT IS ITS NAMESAKE.

WALTER WATKINS IS THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR AND MEMBER OF THE THEATRE'S BOARD.

SO THE ONE-DAY FILM FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE S-M-S PLASTER STUDENT UNION AUDITORIUM.

A SERIES OF FILMS WILL BE SHOWN SATURDAY INCLUDING SOME AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARIES.

WATKINS CHOSE THE FILMS HIMSELF.

AND HE SAYS ALL THE FILMMAKERS HAVE TIES TO SOUTHWEST MISSOURI.

AND WATKINS SAYS THE DIRECTORS OF ALL THE FILMS WILL BE IN TOWN FOR THE FILM FESTIVAL.

WATKINS SAYS HE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO HAVE THE GILLIOZ FILM FESTIVAL.

HE SAYS HE HOPES IT WILL INTRODUCE A NEW GENERATION TO A THEATRE THAT HE AND MANY OTHERS ENJOYED.

PROCEEDS FROM THE FESTIVAL WILL HELP FUND THE RESTORTATION OF THE GILLIOZ.

AND WHILE WATKINS IS HOPING FOR A LARGE TURNOUT, HE HAS A WARNING FOR PARENTS WHO WANT TO BRING THEIR CHILDREN.

WATKINS SAYS HE HOPES TO MAKE THIS AN ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL.

HE SAYS IF IT'S SUCCESSFUL, THE FILM FESTIVAL COULD GROW INTO A LARGER EVENT.

AND WATKINS SAYS HE HOPES SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE, SOME CELEBRITIES WITH SPRINGFIELD TIES WILL ATTEND THE FILM FESTIVAL.

HE SAYS HE CONSIDERED ASKING ACTOR BRAD PITT TO COME TO THE FESTIVAL THIS YEAR...

THE GILLIOZ FILM FESTIVAL IS THIS SATURDAY. IT BEGINS AT 11:45 A-M AND WRAPS UP AT 10:30 P-M.

ADVANCE TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE SPRINGFIELD AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND MASCHINO'S HOME EXPRESS.
