13-year-old Kamili gave birth to her 7th calf Saturday afternoon. The 164-pound female calf was born in the giraffe yard with zookeepers and zoo guests observing.
By Sunday morning, Kamili started showing signs of poor health, and zoo staff began bottle feeding the calf.
Kamili's health continued to decline, and zoo staff made the decision to euthanize her. Preliminary findings from the necropsy showed she was suffering from heart disease. There was also lung congestion and damage to the liver and kidneys.
The calf is off-exhibit while zoo staff care for her.
