The Springfield Public Schools Foundation announces the 2006-07 Reading Roundup goals for aquisition of books to be placed in Springfield Public School system libraries. Mike Smith talked with Morey Mechlin, Director of the Springfield Public Schools Foundation, and has this report:
September marks kick-off for Reading Roundup fund drive
September marks Reading Roundup's annual fund drive to purchase books for Springfield's public school libraries. This year's goal is 25,644 books. An anonymous donor has contributed $5,000 and challenges others in the community to help.
Since this grassroots campaign began six years ago, Reading Roundup and Springfield Public Schools have partnered to replace more than 100,000 worn-out and dated books in our school libraries and add another 50,000.
"Research shows that the quality of libraries has a measurable influence on student learning," said David Harrison, who chairs the steering committee. "Reading Roundup asks everyone who can to help make our public school libraries the best they can be. We only have one chance to provide our children with the education they need."
Contributions should be made to Springfield Public Schools Foundation, earmarked for Reading Roundup, and sent to 940 N. Jefferson 65802.
