Governor Cites Lack of Mission as Reason for Not Seeking Re-election

During a press conference in Jefferson City today, Governor Matt Blunt said he doesn't have a sense of mission for a second term and that's why he's not seeking re-election. KSMU's Missy Shelton participated in the press conference by phone and files this report.

The lack of a mission is essentially the only reason Governor Matt Blunt cited for not seeking a second term.

He said his decision had nothing to do with allegations his office violated the state's open records law by deleting emails. He also said it had nothing to do with what was shaping up to be a tough battle to keep his job.

Speculation abounds about who will run for governor on the Republican ticket. Though there haven't been any official announcements yet, names being mentioned around the capitol include Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, Congressman Kenny Hulshof, and House Speaker Rod Jetton.
