Governor Matt Blunt says requiring most gasoline in the state to contain 10% ethanol is good for the environment. Blunt made the statement to reporters one day after the Senate approved the ethanol mandate. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.
The ethanol bill is one that Governor Matt Blunt encouraged lawmakers to pass during his State of the State address in January.
The bill had broad support in the senate...It passed by a vote of 26 to 7 despite objections from a handful of Republican and Democratic senators.
During debate on the ethanol bill, Republican Senator Matt Bartle of suburban Kansas City cautioned the senate against interfering with the free market.
Asked if the 10 percent ethanol requirement tampered with the marketplace, Republican Governor Matt Blunt said there's a reason for government to intervene in this case.
The House and Senate have passed their own versions of the bill...Lawmakers now must meet in conference committee to work out the differences between the two chambers.
