Governor's Chief of Staff Meets with Abortion Rights Group

Staff and volunteers with Planned Parenthood presented Governor Matt Blunt's chief of staff with seven thousand postcards that urge the governor to reconsider his decision to call a special session. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The abortion rights group presented Ken McClure with seven thousand postcards from constituents urging the governor to reconsider his decision to call a special session.

The governor has said he'll call the special session so lawmakers can approve legislation that places tighter regulations on abo rtion clinics and also discourages minors from going across state lines for abortions, thereby circumventing Missouri's parental consent law.

The legislation got bogged down during the regular session in a dispute among anti-abortion groups over language related to stem cell research.

Planned Parenthood staffers argue the special session is a waste of money because there are more important issues facing the state.

Following the meeting, the governor's chief of staff, Ken McClure spoke with K-S-M-U.

He says he told the group that abortion isn't the only issue that needs to be addressed in special session.

Planned Parenthood staffers say they've been trying to set up a meeting with the governor's staff for several months.
