Green Sales Tax Holiday Economically and Environmentally Friendly

Money Fan

If you’re looking to save a little extra “green” this year, taking part in Missouri’s Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday one weekend in April could help you do just that. KSMU’s Chasity Mayes reports.

Nine counties and 43 cities in Missouri will participate in the Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday this year. This is the third year that the state will encourage Missouri’s citizens to “go green” by eliminating sales tax on new Energy Star qualified appliances.

The city of Republic is taking part in this year’s tax free event. It’s hoping the holiday will increase traffic in local businesses and create repeat customers.

Brian Buckner is the Mayor of Republic.

“In the city of Republic we want to make sure that we at least allow our citizens at least a break in this economic cycle that we’re having. And this seemed like a good way to do it. And hopefully it brings some business into town and maybe people that haven’t seen Republic would like to get acquainted with our nice city that we have here,” says Buckner.

The sales tax holiday will exempt state and city retail sales taxes on energy efficient appliances up to 1,500 dollars each. In Republic, the combination of city and state taxes will equal a savings of 6.475 percent.

However, Buckner says looking at the bigger picture shows that there are much bigger savings.

“Take a washer for example, the conventional top loader washer, if it’s not high efficiency, uses roughly 40 gallons per use. The new high efficiency washer uses approximately 14 gallons per use. So, you’re saving about 26 gallons of water every time you use it. If you use it for example five times a week you’re saving well over right at 130 gallons a week in water,” says Buckner.

Missouri’s Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday will start April 19th and end on April 25th.

Washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces, and air conditioners can be purchased tax free as long as they have met Energy Star guidelines.

Those who live out of state can also take advantage of these savings by buying qualifying products in Missouri.
