Gustav to Help Bring Rain to the Ozarks

Gustav is expected to be partially responsible for a wet week in the Ozarks. KSMU's Michele Skalicky reports.

Get your rain gear ready. It's likely going to be a wet week. Meteorologist Drew Albert with the National Weather Service Office in Springfield explains what we can expect.

"We've got two weather systems that are kind of going to combine to produce the potential for some heavy rainfall and flooding over the Ozarks. First, we have what's been in the news for the past couple of days, the remains of Hurricane Gustav, which is now over Northeast Louisiana, and that's expected to slowly track to the north over the next couple of days, and, of course, the moisture with that is going to track north with it, and we'll see increasing moisture moving into the Missouri Ozarks with time. Meanwhile, there is a cold front out over the Plains that's also going to move east into Kansas and then into Missouri later today into tomorrow and become stationary."

Albert says they predict the remains of Gustav will interact with that front and produce heavy rain across the region.

Rain chances will increase today, but Albert says we probably won't see heavy rain until late tomorrow into tomorrow night and Thursday.

Northern Arkansas is already under flood and flash flood watches, and Albert says the National Weather Service likely will issue watches for Southern Missouri, too.

"If the forecast trends continue, we'll likely be issuing flood watches for our region as well either later today or tonight."

Drew Albert says there's potential for 4 to 5 inches of rainfall this week over a large area.

"If we do get rainfall like that, that does cause flooding in the Missouri Ozarks, so a potentially dangerous situation coming up."

The rain is expected to taper off Thursday night into Friday morning. Temperatures tomorrow thru Friday will be cool, in the mid to upper 70s.
