The Springfield-Greene County Health Department says the county did receive some doses of the recalled H1N1 vaccine, but there's no need for concern. KSMU's Michele Skalicky reports...
About 22,000 doses of a vaccine for H1N1 that have been recalled were sent to Missouri. State health officials say doses of the recalled vaccine were sent to 75 counties across the state.Greene County received a few doses from the lots that were recalled. Springfield-Greene County Health Department spokesperson Jaci McReynolds says approximately 20 doses were administered here...
"But what's important to remember is that the vaccine itself is not unsafe. The recall was voluntary, and it was based on the fact that the vaccine had lost a little bit of its potency after it was shipped. But, experts believe that it still will be very viable in building that immune system."
McReynolds says parents of children who received a recalled dose do not need to worry and do not need to have their children re-vaccinated...
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the manufacturer of the vaccine all agree that the vaccine still should be strong enough to continue to provide that immune response that's needed to protect against H1N1."
Health officials say the doses affected by the recall are preservative-free, pre-filled syringes for children less than 3 years old.Hundreds of thousands of the doses were recalled nationally after tests showed the vaccine lost some strength.
