High Risk Flu Shot Clinics Scheduled in Springfield

The Springfield Flu Immunization Coalition has announced dates for its 2010 high-risk seasonal flu shot clinics. KSMU’s Michele Skalicky has more…

It’s nearly flu season, and that means it’s time for flu vaccination clinics. Springfield-Greene County Health Department spokesperson Katie Towns-Jeter says those considered high-risk should call in advance and make a reservation for the clinics...

"People who fall into high-risk categories would include adults ages 65 and older, adults with chronic health conditions such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes. Also, women who are pregnant during influenza season will also fall into that high-risk category."

Reservations can be made Monday October 11 thru Friday October 15 from 8 am until noon. The number to call is 874-1228…

"What we'll ask for is a name and phone number, and we'll find a convenient time for the individual calling during that week of the clinics, October 25th thru 29th, and make a reservation for them to receive a flu vaccine during those clinics."

Clinic locations and dates are 7 to noon October 25 at Ozarks Community Hospital, October 26 at Cox Walnut Lawn, October 27 at the Northview Senior Center, October 28 at St. Agnes school and October 29 at St. Johns CH “Chub” O’Reilly Cancer Center.Towns-Jeter encourages everyone, especially those in the high-risk category, to get a flu shot…

"It's really important that people protect themselves from the flu and also that you protect your family and your loved ones from the flu by getting vaccinated because flu is something that can cause serious complications and even death in some cases."

Children under age 18 will not be vaccinated at the Oct. 25-29 clinics. The general public should talk to their doctor about the flu vaccine or check the health department’s website for a list of retail locations that are offering flu shots. That’s at www.springfieldmo.gov/health.

Again, individuals in the high-risk category can make a reservation for the flu shot clinics by calling 874-1228 October 11 thru 15 from 8 am until noon. For KSMU News, I’m Michele Skalicky.
