House Democrats Unveil Healthcare Proposal

A group of Democratic House members were in Springfield today to announce a new healthcare proposal. Their main goal is to restore healthcare to those who lost it in 2005. That's when the Republican-controlled General Assembly passed changes to Medicaid that resulted in more than 100 thousand people losing healthcare. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Democratic Representative Judy Baker of Columbia says there's money available to provide healthcare coverage to those who lost it.

Republicans have resisted calls to use the budget surplus to restore the Medicaid cuts. Republican Representative Jim Viebrock of Republic says many groups will lay claim to the surplus.

The Democrats acknowledge they'll have a tough time selling Republicans like Jim Viebrock on their healthcare proposal. Representative Paul LeVota of Independence is the Democratic Floor Leader.

Many Republicans, who hold a majority in the House and Senate say they've shown leadership on healthcare by passing the MO Healthnet plan this past session.
