A constitutional amendment is proposed to protect stem cell research in Missouri. Mike Smith has the story:
From the Associated Press and KSMU News
The Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures (MCLC) filed paperwork Tuesday October 11th to try to get the measure on the November 2006 ballot.
The measure comes after anti-abortion groups led an unsucessful effort to outlaw a certain type of early stem cell research.
At issue is a procedure known as somatic cell nuclear transfer or SCNT, in which the nucleus of an unfertalized egg is replaced with cells from other body parts. The altered egg then is stimulated to grow to harvest the stem cells.
While visiting the KSMU studios the same day MCLC filed their paperwork, Governor Matt Blunt said he favors the initiative.
Dave Plemmons, the Southwest Region Director for Missouri Right to life tells KSMU News that SCNT IS cloning, and the procedure destroys human life.
The MCLC says it needs 140,000 petition signitures to get the issue on next years ballot.
Stem Cell researchers hope to find cures for diseases like diabetes, parkinson's, and cancer.
