Intersection Improvements in Springfield

The city of Springfield celebrated the completion of work at one of the city's busiest intersections today.

IF YOU'VE DRIVEN THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AT SUNSHINE AND KANSAS EXPERSSWAY, YOU'VE PROBABLY NOTICED THERE ARE DUAL LEFT TURN LANES AND ENHANCED RIGHT TURN LANES.

THAT'S MARC THORNSBERRY, THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS FOR SPRINGFIELD.

HE SAYS THE SUNSHINE/KANSAS EXPRESSWAY PROJECT IS THE FIFTH OF EIGHT PLANNED INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS AROUND THE CITY.

HALF THE FUNDING FOR THESE PROJECTS CAME FROM THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE OTHER HALF CAME FROM THE ONE-EIGHTH OF ONE CENT SALES TAX THAT VOTERS APPROVED IN 2000...THAT TAX WAS ON THE BALLOT THIS AUGUST AND VOTERS RENEWED IT.

THORNSBERRY SAYS THERE ARE A NUMBER OF TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS SLATED FOR COMPLETION IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

AND THORNSBERRY SAYS HE AND OTHER CITY PLANNERS ARE LOOKING EVEN FURTHER INTO THE FUTURE...HE SAYS WITH THE GROWTH IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI, HE ANTICIPATES KANSAS EXPRESSWAY EXPANDING TO SIX LANES.

THORNSBERRY SAYS THERECENT INTERSECTION PROJECTS TOOK THAT INTO CONSIDERATION.

THORNSBERRY SAYS AS MORE PEOPLE MOVE INTO THE AREA, THE CITY WILL TRY TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS TO TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WILL MAKE CITY TRAFFIC FLOW MORE SMOOTHLY.

THORNSBERRY SAYS NEARLY 60 THOUSAND VEHICLES TRAVEL THROUGH THE INTERSECTION OF SUNSHINE AND KANSAS EXPRESSWAY EACH DAY.
