It's Important to Wear Sunscreen to Protect Your Skin from Future Harm

The average temperatures during this part of the year are in the mid to upper 90's and that means lots of sun. Experts say that you need to put on sunscreen anytime you are outside to avoid possible short term and long term injuries. KSMU's Joe Morgan has more.

Many people enjoy being outside in the summer heat, but according to Community Oncology Educator Autumn Bragg with Cox Healthsystem, most of them don't take the right precautions to protect their skin from the damage caused by the sun.

Bragg says that sunscreen needs to be applied anytime someone is out in the sun and that includes winter time as well because the sun's rays are extremely harmful. She explains what doctors recommend.

She says that wearing sunscreen will help protect against multiple problems.

Bragg says that tanning is not a good idea on any level due to the danger of the sun's rays. But she does say that a spray on tan is safe.

When buying sunscreen, Bragg says to look for certain types of sunscreen that block both UV-A and UV-B rays. She also says that certain sunscreens are certified.

Bragg says that the expiration dates on sunscreen should be followed. She says that most sunscreen is guaranteed for three years after purchase but if used regularly then an expiration date shouldn't be an issue. For KSMU News, I'm Joe Morgan.
