One Republican and a number of Democrats, including Attorney General Jay Nixon took the stage at a labor union rally in Jefferson City. Nixon has said he'll challenge Republican Governor Matt Blunt in 2008. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.
As some in the crowd shouted the word "governor," Attorney General Jay Nixon walked to the podium. He made what sounded like a campaign speech to labor union members who filled the south lawn of the capitol.
Nixon attacked both Republican Governor Matt Blunt and the Republican-led legislature for new laws that Nixon says hurt workers.
Only one Republican spoke at the labor rally...Senator Chris Koster.
Inside the capitol, Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields defended the actions of Republican lawmakers and the governor.
One labor union member who was at the rally, Stacey Salmon says labor issues shouldn't be partisan.
Salmon is from Joplin but works in Kansas City as the business manager for the laborer's district council.
During his speech at the labor rally, Attorney General Jay Nixon addressed several labor issues.
He railed against illegal workers.
The fact that some of the democrats who spoke at the labor rally used partisan language isn't surprising to Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields.
But he says Republicans are interested in issues that are important to organized labor.
Organizers of the rally say nearly 3 thousand labor union members and supporters came to the capitol to talk to lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats about a wide-range of labor issues.
