Lampe Aims to Repeal Old "Butter Bill"

A state representative from southwest Missouri aims to repeal an old bill that addresses the sale of a food found in virtually every American household. KSMU's Jennifer Moore reports.

In the spring, State Representative Sara Lampe asked her constituents to participate in a contest called “There Oughta Be a Law,” and asked them to fill in the blanks. Many of them wrote in to say Missouri doesn’t need more laws, and in fact, it could probably do without several of its current ones.

So, Representative Lampe had a look and found one from 1896 she thinks Missouri would be better without. It’s centered around butter.

As it stands in Missouri, it’s currently illegal to sell a butter substitute that is yellow in color, or that uses the word “butter” in its logo. The law hasn’t been enforced since the 1930s, but Lampe is filing a bill this legislative session to repeal it nonetheless.

Representative Lampe joined me by phone to talk about her proposed legislation.
