Library Has Lots To Offer This Summer

During the summer, the library becomes much busier as summer reading programs start and new books are released. KSMU's Greg Leuthen recently sat down with a librarian to discuss the reading programs at the Springfield-Green County Library as well as how they are preparing for the release of the seventh and final Harry Potter book.

Leuthen: This is Greg Leuthen for KSMU News, I'm here in the Springfield-Green County Library with Nancee Dahms-Stinson. She is the Youth Services coordinator as well as a librarian. Nancee, I wanted to ask you about the summer reading program. Could you elaborate on your program this year as well as the new aspects this year?

Dahms-Stinson: The theme this summer for our summer reading program is Mysteries, Puzzles, and all kinds of "Sleuthy" type things. It's "Get a Clue at your Library," and kids can pick up a game board. They can get a summer reading coupon pack after they've reached level one. Once they reach the "Super Sleuth" Level they receive a free book.

Leuthen: It sounds like the kids have plenty of incentive, but what about the teenagers and college students. They are losing their interest in reading. Do you have anything to offer them?

Dahms-Stinson: We sure do. We realize they have less incentive to read and more on their plates as they grow older. Our theme for the teens is "You Never Know at Your Library." The can get a summer reading program pack as well, and for every two hours they read they can enter a drawing where free MP3 players will be given away.

Leuthen: Just like the big movie production companies release their biggest movies in the summer, the publishing companies are releasing the biggest books in the summer, and that starts with the seventh Harry Potter book. Could I get your comments on that?

Dahms-Stinson: Harry Potter is the big talk of the town in the publishing world, the library world, and for anyone that likes to read. It's the seventh book and the last book of the series, so people are very excited. We've order 175 copies and we have to keep them under strict lock and key the entire time, even the staff can't see them. Early on July 21st, the staff will come in early and start checking the books in, and people can come in first thing in the morning and start checking them out.

Leuthen: That was Nancee Dahms-Stinson. For more information on summer reading programs or how to reserve a copy of the seventh Harry Potter book you can visit any of the Green County local libraries.
