The familiar sound of lawn mowers is ringing through the air again. With this summertime chore comes the potential for accidents. Brett Moser reports.
Before the first blade of grass is cut, people operating lawn mowers this summer should know serious injuries involving children can result from lawn mower accidents.
Paula Hernandez, a trauma nurse at Cox Health describes the common scenarios for this type of accident.
Hernandez says nearly sixty eight thousand lawn mower related injuries are reported in the United States each summer. At least ten thousand involve children.
The Coordinator of Safe Kids Springfield Daphne Greenlee says most of the scenarios are preventable.
Greenlee says parents should clear any debris that might be flung as well as make sure they wear sturdy shoes, not sandals or flip flops.
In the event of a mower related accident, Greenlee explains what to do.
Both Hernandez and Greenlee say the most important safety tip is to always keep children at a safe distance.
