Four local ambulances are on their way to the Gulf of Mexico region in anticipation of Tropical Storm Gustav's projected arrival on Monday. KSMU's Jennifer Moore reports.
The deployment is a joint effort between Springfield's two major health systems, CoxHealth and St. John's, to provide relief to victims of the approaching storm.
Each hospital sent two ambulances and waved their crews goodbye early this morning.
Mark Alexander, director of CoxHealth's Pre-Hospital Services, says the deployment is just another example of the two competing hospitals coming together for a common good.
The ambulances are headed to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where they will be on hand to evacuate nursing homes and the sick and transport them to a safe location if needed.
Alexander says both hospitals are subcontracted with a nationwide ambulance service and FEMA, in which they agree to provide ambulances in times of disaster.
The four local ambulances are expected to arrive in San Antonio tonight, three days before Tropical Storm Gustav is projected to hit the Gulf Coast.
