Local Reaction to Kerry's Running Mate: Interview with Dr. George Connor.

Earlier today, John Kerry announced that North Carolina Senator John Edwards will be his running mate. KSMU's Missy Shelton got local reaction to the news. Interview with Dr. George Connor. (Part 2)

CONNOR SAYS HISTORICALLY, VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ARE USED TO BALANCE THE TICKET. HE SAYS THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT JOHN EDWARDS IS THAT KERRY BEAT HIM IN SOUTHERN STATES SO EDWARDS DOESN'T BALANCE THE TICKET GEOGRAPHICALLY. INSTEAD, CONNOR SAYS EDWARDS ENHANCES THE TICKET BECAUSE HE'S A "NEW DEMOCRAT" WHERE KERRY IS VIEWED AS AN "OLD DEMOCRAT."

CONNOR SAYS EDWARDS' CHARISMA WILL ENHANCE THE TICKET AND WILL APPEAL TO CERTAIN TYPES OF VOTERS--PERHAPS YOUNGER VOTERS, DISENCHANTED VOTERS. HIS CHARISMA WILL HELP THE DEMOCRATIC TICKET.

CONNOR SAYS EDWARDS WILL HELP KERRY CAPTURE SWING VOTERS, NOT NECESSARILY SWING STATES.

CONNOR SAYS THE BUSH-CHENEY CAMPAIGN WON'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE...THEY MAY SAY HE DOESN'T HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE. CONNOR SAYS THE CURRENT V.P. HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE WHERE EDWARDS IS ONLY SERVING HIS FIRST TERM.
