News that the 17-year-old daughter of Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant has generated renewed discussions about teen pregnancy and the issues surrounding it. KSMU's Missy Shelton spoke with some local teens about the issue and files this report.
Nineteen-year-old Shawna Smith of Springfield knows something about the issue of teen pregnancy. She has a 4 month old baby at home. She says Bristol Palin, daughter of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is fortunate to have a supportive family during her pregnancy.
Shawna says she's glad she has the support of her parents. She's able to care for her child while also finishing her high school education at Springfield's Bailey Alternative High School. That's also where eighteen-year-old Brittany Beckham is going to school. She's a teen mom. She says it's not easy to have a child as a teenager.
Nineteen-year-old Collier Griffin hasn't had to confront the realities of teen pregnancy himself but he has a friend who recently found out his girlfriend's pregnant. Collier says he feels sorry for Palin's daughter...He says dealing with teen pregnancy is hard enough but having the attention of the national media attention on your situation would only make it worse.
