Another Republican has announced his candidacy for Missouri’s 7th congressional seat. KSMU’s Katie Easley has the update on this race, which is still a year away
Billy Long has officially announced his candidacy for Congress. He’s currently working on a survey that asks the public what issues they feel are most important.
“It’s just a matter of getting things prioritized seeing what people are most concerned with. I’d like to see them take the health care bill and come out with 8 one inch bills as opposed to one 8 inch bill,” says Long.
The race is already crowded on the Republican side. But Democrats have yet to announce a candidate. Matt Patterson, spokesman for the Greene County Democratic Party, says they will soon.
“We do have someone in mind. They'rejust going through getting their paperwork pulled and getting it filed and they’ll declare they are an official candidate for that position,” says Patterson.
Patterson says he thinks having the ballot full of Republican candidates may actually help the Democratic Party in this election. The last time a Democrat held thisseat was in 1956.
“If you would have asked me before this I wasn’t so optimistic. Now that we’ve seen 6 or 7 Republicans in there and so many of them raising significant amounts of money I think you’ll see a lot of them attack each other personally. Whether it’s on the record or whether it’s on their person,” says Patterson.
The seat for the 7th Congressional District is currently held by Republican Congressman Roy Blunt. Blunt is running for US Senator to replace Kit Bond, who is not seeking re-election.
